My first quilt. Life, Life, Joy

First Class Quilt
Life, Joy, Peace

After a few years of taking classes from introduction to sewing to advanced clothing techniques, I decided to take a stab at quilting.  This is the first full class project quilt using basic piecing techniques shown in class.

First, I am partially colour blind, so I need a lot of help selecting my fabrics and colours for every quilt I make.  This actually was constructive in class as it lead to a number of discussions on mixing and matching colours.

This quilt is based on a main fabric that has what we called Aztec Life.  From there we explored various combinations and layouts until coming up with the final design.

This is my instructor Nicole who is working on setting up the layout on my quilt.

Some ideas we explored for the layout of the main center piece.

Some more ideas.

The final layout coming together.  Since I had taken embroidery classes as well I decided to incorporate some embroidered pieces.  I chose a small lizard as the embroidered piece.

This is the final quilt.  The center piece is meant to represent a life path.

A close up of the lizards.

This is on of the corners.  This represents the cycle of life around the four cardinal points.

The backing is the same theme as the front but in a different colour.

My signature block.  I started this quilt in 2008 and finished it in 2013.
